I can still see the look on my student’s face three years ago—a mix of sheer panic and confusion—when I handed back his essay. He had tried so hard to impress the examiner by sprinkling “colorful” phrases into every sentence, but he had used them so clumsily that his writing felt like a jigsaw puzzle
I was sitting in a cramped exam hall last Tuesday, the air thick with the scent of stale coffee and nervous sweat, watching a student stare blankly at a writing prompt. She knew the vocabulary, she had the complex sentence structures, and her ideas were brilliant—but she was hemorrhaging marks because she simply didn’t know
I remember sitting in a cramped staff room ten years ago, staring at a pile of exam scripts that all looked identical. The air was thick with the smell of stale coffee and the collective frustration of a dozen teachers. Every single student had been taught the same “fancy” way to approach their writing, yet
I was sitting in a cramped classroom in Johannesburg last Tuesday, watching a student with a brilliant mind stare in total frustration at a practice paper. He had the vocabulary of a scholar, but he was hemorrhaging marks because he couldn’t grasp the simple logic of how articles work. It’s the same story I’ve seen

I’ve spent nineteen years watching bright, capable professionals walk into exam rooms only to watch their scores bleed out because they followed “standard” advice that was actually just fluff. Most textbooks will give you a bloated, five-page template and tell you that complexity equals professionalism, but they are lying to you. If you want to
I was sitting in a cramped exam hall last Tuesday, watching a student—a brilliant professional, really—slowly sink into a state of pure panic. He knew his subject matter inside out, but as he stared at that blank page, he was paralyzed by the sheer weight of “academic fluff” he thought he needed to include. He
I can still see the look on my student’s face last Tuesday—that specific, hollow expression of someone who studied for months only to realize they’ve been playing the wrong game. He knew the definitions, he knew the grammar rules, but when it came to the actual exam, he was guessing. He was treating how modal
I’ve sat across from hundreds of exhausted professionals, watching them stare at a blinking cursor, wondering how to write an executive summary that doesn’t immediately get tossed into the recycling bin. Most textbooks will tell you it’s about “synthesizing complex data” or “optimizing stakeholder engagement,” but that’s just academic fluff that gets in the way
